Song of the Day: Portland Is Leaving by Rocky Votolato Archive

NBC, You're Fired

trumped I have curtailed my television watching down to a bare minimum over the past few years primarily because there isn't anything good on anymore (save Seinfeld reruns and Malcolm in the Middle).... I do however find myself watching the television news in the mornings on occasion and I almost vomit when the inevitable soft news portion comes on.

For those unfamiliar with soft news this is the portion of the show when we promote our own network programming under the guise of real news.

At Fox you get ground breaking exposé regarding who the latest contestant to be kicked off the show is and what they have to say about it. At NBC you get in depth reports on how professors are using The Apprentice to teach economics. EVERYDAY they dig up some scrap of information about these shows for you to make important decisions based on (like what to watch on TV that night).

I don't blame the newscasters, I know they're just the victim of their corporate marketing department. I'm sure they are just as sick (if not more so) of hearing reports on Donald Trump's hair as I am.

So what do we do to fight this popular trend? Well you could write in and complain to the station. This option is unlikely to get you anywhere, and its a bit too proactive for me. So I quietly fight the man by turning off the TV, and turning on the radio -- public radio. NPR is great, more than a bit depressing these days, but its a breath of fresh air compared to hearing another soft news story. And when you hit the power button on the TV remote, nothing gives me more pleasure than to say, in my worst New York accent, "Your Fired!"
