I discovered Ash during my time in Australia on late night television. Seriously! There was this show called "Rage" back then (I doubt if it is still on) but they showed all these videos from midnight until the early morning hours. Sometimes they were good, and sometimes they were bad. I saw the "Girl From Mars" video and I loved it.

"1977" is one of my favorite albums of all time, and is easily the band's best effort. Each song is a classic and offers something different than all the others. I could do without the "hidden track" in which lead singer Tim Wheeler vomits all over the recording studio. Its funny the first time, but just makes you sick after that.

The addition of Charlotte in 1998 gave the band a fuller sound, and was indeed a bold move. Adding a band member after you are already an established band (especially of the opposite sex) is a rare occurance. But Ash pulled it off.

Nu-clear Sounds and Free All Angels are also good records, but not close to the "classic" status of 1977.

Just to clarify, 'Rage' is still showing in Australia, and is the only music show worth watching. Once they get the obligatory Top 40 crap out of the road, they show a very diverse range of music covering a lot of different genres and eras. And no annoying hosts to listen to (unless a band is asked to guest host), just music, music, music! Check it out: http://www.abc.net.au/rage/
