Elliott Smith
Website

I didn't like Elliott Smith when I first heard him. I thought his songs were too wimpy for my taste. I bought "Figure 8" when I lived in China and suddenly had an all new appreciation for him. The song "Everything Means Nothing To Me" is incredible, and my favorite of his songs off of this under-rated album.

I tried to get tickets for his concert in 2001, however when we showed up at the box office we discovered he had cancelled due to illness.

It really came as a shock when he committed suicide in 2004. I had really come to respect his music at this point, and it pissed me off that someone with so much talent could throw it all away like that. Now, I feel like Elliott was sick with an illness, just like any other disease, and this was the cause of his death.

"From a Basement on a Hill" is also a great album, better than Figure 8, I think. I rave on about it in this article about my favorite albums of 2004. There are still so many of his early records that I haven't heard yet, and it gives me something to look forward to, as this great artist came to his end far too soon.
