Weezer

Weezer
Website

Here is the band that single-handedly started the emo revolution -- while at the same time remaining firmly outside the genre. Sounds strange, but Weezer isn't really emo (if you disagree, listen to one of their records again), yet somehow they became the poster child. I think it was River's glasses.

In the interest of full disclosure, Weezer have been my favorite band for years. I've been hooked ever since hearing the first few notes of the Blue Album back in '94. I went though every song on that album and I loved every one. Thoughout my life the album has redefined itself, not just reminding me of high school, but has continued be relevant to my life today as a twenty-something.

Pinkerton brought change, and it was good. I have often said that picking the best between Pinkerton and the Blue Album is like picking the best of your own children. Many don't like Pinkerton. I am not one of those people.

It is strange to look back at what was the pinnicle of someone's career and try to figure out what made it so different from today. River's songwriting seemed to come so effortlessly in these days, and he created so much beautiful music.

In the days of the Green Album and Maladroit came the days of hype. The internet allowed us to know the band's every move. This was a double edged sword to me, and after years of anticipation of the Green Album, I was left feeling hollow inside.

Maladroit was similar, but I didn't buy into the hype. I didn't purchase the record for several months after it was released, not because it had already been released on the internet (I never downloaded these songs) but because I was in China at the time if its release. After I heard it, I wasn't all that impressed. But there was hope on the Weezer horizon. New songs emerged on the internet from an unreleased album of the future. There were roughly twenty songs that I had that took me somewhere Weezer hadn't taken me for years.

The new Weezer album comes out in the spring of this year (2005). I have my fingers crossed that the greatness of these songs isn't lost in the studio.
